My new favorite hat
I felt like I was rolling the dice on the size, but the large fits my 23" head perfectly. The size chart on Amazon is different than the manufacturer's website, and both are wrong. I uploaded a picture of the size chart that came attached to the item. It is spot on and I recommend you use it to order fromI love the hat, it feels sturdy and of good quality. Baseball caps don't look quite right on my head, but I spend a lot of time outdoors and like protection from the sun. This hat is definitely replacing my straw sombreros that have been my go to for quite a while.I immediately clipped off the tassels in the rear as they were much too long for my preference. I have to get out in it in heavy wind to see if I want to keep the chin strap or not as it gets in my line of sight when I bend over if I don't put it in back of my neck or tighten it. Neither of these take away from the hat, just my own preference. The packaging was sufficient to keep the hat dry even though the delivery man left it in the pouring rain.

Greasy waterproofing, returned.
Box was too small for the hat and the hat brim was badly bent. Even with an easily shapeable wire brim the brim was still lopsided after trying to flatten it and straighten for good rain protection. The brim is stiff enough to hold itself up but it is easily bent and mishapen.I have an XL head, barely over 60cm with a full head of half inch long hair. Looking at my head from the top down it is kind of a round slightly oval shape and the hat fit was comfortably loose without being sloppy on my head, definitely not a snug fit. Would have room to let my hair grow longer for a fee months without making the hat too tight. The so-called secret pocket inside the hat is a joke. The shape of the hat crown is slightly indented downward and that makes the pocket unusable because the fabric has just enough play in it to compensate for the indented crown. When the crown is pushed up the pocket could have something soft or bendable placed inside it, like money, and then the crown could be pushed down to it's indented shape. Trying to put something rigid, like a CC or ID, in the pocket and pushing the crown down wouldn't work to well. This is the first clothing item I have tried with this waterproof coating and I hate the coating. The coating leaves a greasy almost sticky film on the fingers and anything else the item touches like a table when I was trying to flatten and straighten the brim. Taking the hat on/off like a normal person by grabbing the pinch front of the crown means that area of the hat is slowly losing it's waterproofing everytime the hat is taken on/off and a film of the waterproofing is left on the fingers and/or hand. The only way to take the hat on/off without getting greasy fingers and slowly defeating the waterproofing is to grab the very edge of the brim of the hat with the tip of both index fingers and thumbs and take the hat on/off that way so it is barely being touched.I left the hat sit for a few hours on top of my upright hiking pack while I was thinking about whether or not to keep the hat. I tried it on again, tried working the brim a bit more and noticed the greasy waterproof coating on the hat is a dust and fuzz magnet, even the underside of the hat from sitting on my backpack. The greasy coating, the easily mishapen brim and now the hat needs to be stored or covered to keep dust and fuzz off it?! Seeing the dust and fuzz all over the hat was the final straw. It is going back!Prior to this hat all of my waterproofing experience is with silicone spray. Yes silicone is best applied in at least a few thin coats and allowed to dry in between coats, and depending on the amount of exposure to water the silicone may need to be reapplied more frequently. But silicone isn't sticky or greasy and once dry can't even tell it is on a piece of clothing until the water rolls off it. I don't know what the next hat will be that I order. Going to try to buy something with a stiff flat brim and will give it a good spray down of silicone spray. This hat is not as sticky or greasy as Obenauf's bootlaces that are heavily coated with beeswax. The hat is about as greasy as Obenauf's laces after they have been used regularly or daily for a couple months and most of the beeswax is worn off. So if you like Obenauf's bootlaces and don't mind the beeswax then you might like this hat. I put up with the Obenauf's bootlaces for a couple months and committed myself to washing my hands with hot soapy water after tying the laces. After most the beeswax wears off the laces aren't bad, but one lace did eventually break after a year of being pulled through lace eyes. That was my first and last pair of Obenauf's bootlaces.Even though I returned the hat I still gave the hat three stars. Even though I am not happy with it for the reasons above the hat is well made with good materials and stitching and the hat looks good. For the right person this seems like a quality hat that will provide many years of use.

Waterproof, runs a little small
So after wearing baseball style hats for many years out hunting and riding horses while complaining about water on my neck, this year I thought no more. While not wanting to ruin some of my other/nicer felt brimmed hats it lead me to think why not something in oilskin like my drover?side note: I have multiple drovers for riding and the outback oilskin drover is hands down on of the best for staying dry even in heavy rains and snow.Ok, back to the hat here...Things to note about the hat:- Oilskin is very stiff right out of the package...wear it and it will soften some over time- Yes, it is 100% waterproof. Tested in the rains of the NW several days in a row and no issues- Hat is very warm IMO. It does have vent holes, but it's not massive amount of airflow and if you are trekking a ways you are going to sewat- Hat does have a sweat band that helps, but again if you are hoofing it around, keep a bandanna or rag with you.Item of NOTE: because of the sweatband in the hat and how you like your hat to fit (I personally hat a hat that's too tight)...watch your sizing.I fall between 6-7/8 and a 7 in hat sizing. I had first ordered a Small...that hat went to the GF as it's too tight for me and I had to get the Med. Med fits snug but not tight. If you are at the top end of the size, I advise going UP to the next size and you will be much happier...Overall, its a good waterproof hat and hope to get many years out of it like my other Outback items.

Nice hat, but smaller than expected, and the chin strap broke
It's a nice looking hat. Cotton oilskin is stiffer than leather, just so you know what to expect, and I like oilskin because water won't reshape it (like felt) or stain it (like leather). But while my 23" head circumference falls on the low side of Small (22 1/2" - 27 1/8") on the size chart, the actual hat was a little bit too small. Oilskin cannot be stretched like leather or felt can, so I'm sending it back and will order a medium. The chin strap is a strip of very thin leather, anchored under the sweat band with just a few stitches. One end of the strap broke away from the stitching when the cord clamp caught on something while taking the hat out of the box. A continuous braided cord, routed along the crown beneath the band, then down each side to meet at the cord clamp, would have been much stronger.

Definitely Waterproof!
I ordered this hat for an all-weather horse drive. It was sturdy, but the brim was pliable enough to bend it however you want. It actually fit my head and STAYED on my head at a gallop, which is a feat very few hats can accomplish with my smaller frame. On our last day, it rained for the first half and this thing kept my head dry and warm. I'm 5'3" and ordered S/M. Would recommend.
